Knowledge & Management
Abong’o is a Doctor of Microbiology and
is currently serving as the Coordinator of Research and Knowledge
Management at Great Lakes University of Kisumu (GLUK). Before
joining GLUK he served as a postdoctoral fellow at University
of Fort Hare, South Africa where he had previously graduated with
his PhD in Microbiology. Prior to this he received his MSc in
Applied Microbiology from the University of Botswana and a BSc
Degree from University of Nairobi.
Research Interests : My current
research interests fall within the discipline of Microbiology.
With main focus on the molecular epidemiology of invasive water
and food-borne as well as water-related microbial pathogens in
the aquatic environments of Nyanza Province of Kenya, and the
effect of discharged effluents on the biotic and abiotic components
of the aquatic environment.
The University focuses on action research to develop and test models
of sustainable health and development initiatives. As part of its
academic and research activities, the University formulated a number
of models to facilitate the achievement of universal access to the
Essential Elements of Dignified Living (EEDL) through partnership
and academic programs.
The university is currently engaged in various collaborative research
project. The following are the research projects in which the University
is currently engaged in:
• Strengthening The Health System Through Collaborative Research
To Address Factors Influencing Scaling Up Of The “Community
Strategy” Towards Millennium Development Goals
• Linking Community Based Health Information System and Institutional
Health System For Effective Decision Making
• Scaling Up Community Strategy to Improve Uptake Of Health
Interventions

in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Caribbean
The Great Lakes University of Kisumu
awarded Senior Research Leaders Grant by CNHR
The Great Lakes University of Kisumu (GLUK) was recently awarded
a research award by the Consortium for National Health Research
(CNHR) Senior Research Leaders Grant to train two PhD or Postdoctoral
candidates. The award allows the selected candidates to explore:
1. Health Systems Research focusing on the uptake and cost-effectiveness
of the Community Strategy in different contexts in Kenya and
2. Health Systems strengthening through collaborative action research
focusing on innovative approaches to HRH management at the community
level: Identifying and assessing Innovations and factors and mechanisms
for sustainability and retention.
The training fellowship and research activities will be facilitated
at the Great Lakes University of Kisumu under the knowledgeable
guidance of the research leader who is also the Vice Chancellor
of the University, Prof Dan Kaseje.
More information is available from the CNHR website (www.cnhrkenya.org)
GLUK wins the research grants competition
of the Africa Health Systems Initiative
(AHSI-RES)
The Great Lakes University of Kisumu (GLUK) recently won the research
grants competition of the Africa Health Systems Initiative (AHSI).
GLUK emerged top among fifty-seven eligible applications which were
submitted to Global Health Research Initiative (GHRI) and IDRC in
April 2009. This grant award by GHRI and IDRC’s will support
a project on “Linking community based health information systems
and institutional health information systems for effective decision-making”.
The collaborative research between GLUK, Ministry of Pubic Health
and University of Ottawa will be led by the Vice Chancellor of the
University, Prof Dan Kaseje who is the Principle Investigator and
two
Co-Principle Investigator, Prof. Nancy Edwards (University of Ottawa)

The University is happy to share its recent publications by staff
members in various peer reviewed journals. Among the journals where
staff members published recently include the African Journal for
Community Health and Development (AJCHD), African Journal of Food,
Agriculture, Nutrition and Development (AJFAND), Asia Pacific Symposium
