Abong’o is a Doctor of Microbiology and is currently serving as the Coordinator of Research and Knowledge Management at Great Lakes University of Kisumu (GLUK). Before joining GLUK he served as a postdoctoral fellow at University of Fort Hare, South Africa where he had previously graduated with his PhD in Microbiology. Prior to this he received his MSc in Applied Microbiology from the University of Botswana and a BSc Degree from University of Nairobi.

Research Interests : My current research interests fall within the discipline of Microbiology. With main focus on the molecular epidemiology of invasive water and food-borne as well as water-related microbial pathogens in the aquatic environments of Nyanza Province of Kenya, and the effect of discharged effluents on the biotic and abiotic components of the aquatic environment.

The University focuses on action research to develop and test models of sustainable health and development initiatives. As part of its academic and research activities, the University formulated a number of models to facilitate the achievement of universal access to the Essential Elements of Dignified Living (EEDL) through partnership and academic programs.

The university is currently engaged in various collaborative research project. The following are the research projects in which the University is currently engaged in:

• Linking Community Based Health Information System and Institutional Health System For Effective Decision Making
• Scaling Up Community Strategy to Improve Uptake Of Health Interventions
• Scaling Up Of An Integrated Community Based Care And Support (ICBCS) Package For Orphans And Vulnerable OVC In Nyanza Province , Kenya
• Strengthening Nurses’ Capacity in HIV Policy Development in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Caribbean

The Great Lakes University of Kisumu awarded Senior Research Leaders Grant by CNHR

The Great Lakes University of Kisumu (GLUK) was recently awarded a research award by the Consortium for National Health Research (CNHR) Senior Research Leaders Grant to train two PhD or Postdoctoral candidates. The award allows the selected candidates to explore:
1. Health Systems Research focusing on the uptake and cost-effectiveness of the Community Strategy in different contexts in Kenya and
2. Health Systems strengthening through collaborative action research focusing on innovative approaches to HRH management at the community level: Identifying and assessing Innovations and factors and mechanisms for sustainability and retention.
The training fellowship and research activities will be facilitated at the Great Lakes University of Kisumu under the knowledgeable guidance of the research leader who is also the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Dan Kaseje.

GLUK wins the research grants competition of the Africa Health Systems Initiative
(AHSI-RES)

The Great Lakes University of Kisumu (GLUK) recently won the research grants competition of the Africa Health Systems Initiative (AHSI). GLUK emerged top among fifty-seven eligible applications which were submitted to Global Health Research Initiative (GHRI) and IDRC in April 2009. This grant award by GHRI and IDRC’s will support a project on “Linking community based health information systems and institutional health information systems for effective decision-making”. The collaborative research between GLUK, Ministry of Pubic Health and University of Ottawa will be led by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Dan Kaseje who is the Principle Investigator and two
Co-Principle Investigator, Prof. Nancy Edwards (University of Ottawa) and Dr. John Odondi (Ministry of Public Health).
