Welcome to Great Lakes University of Kisumu, department of community health and development. We are committed to offering high quality education that aligns with the needs of the community.
Strengthening and enhancement of community health and development skills in Africa and the region is critical for sustainable communities and societies in a country. The Great Lakes University of Kisumu recognizes the need for skilled individuals within communities and therefore provides opportunity for capacity building in Phd, Masters, Bachelors, Diploma and certificate in Community Health and Development (CHD). The courses target personnel who would like to acquire more knowledge amongst others interested in the community health sector. Graduates from the programme could be absorbed by health-based NGOs, research institutions, health facilities and government ministries among others.
OUR PROGRAMS

A Bachelor of Science course in Community Health and Development aims at producing health workers who are capable of addressing community health and developmental issues using a bottom- top approach from the community level. The course also aims at producing graduates who can critically analyze community health problems with a view of suggesting and helping to implement solutions.
The program prepares students to effectively plan, develop, implement and evaluate community health programs. Community health professionals work to improve the health and well-being of entire communities. Students in this program are exposed to material in health behavior, community health research, bio-statistics, epidemiology, health communication and professional development.
The degree program is available on a full time (Monday to Friday) and part time basis (Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays) and takes four (4) academic years to complete.
Minimum Entry Requirements
To qualify for a degree in Community Health and Development, the minimum entry requirements are:
KCSE C+ (plus) mean grade with C+ (plus) in Biology/Biological Sciences, C (plain) in English/Swahili, and C (plain) in any two of the following subjects:
Mathematics, Chemistry or Physics, OR Mathematics, Physical Science, Geography/Agriculture.
OR K.A.C.E. 2 (two) Principle passes in relevant subjects
OR Diploma/HND in Community Health Development, Clinical Medicine, Public Health, Human Nutrition, Pharmacy.
OR Be a holder of any other qualification accepted by the University Senate as equivalent to any of the above.
Diploma Holders with Credit Pass will Join 2nd Year Level whereas HND Holders will Join 3rd year Level.
